A Walk around Jewish Soho in London's West End - can you follow my route?

 

Covent Garden fruit and veg market remembered on the corner of Southampton Street and Henrietta Street - have you ever noticed it?

Lithuanian born Zvi Mosheh Skikne is remembered in the Actors Church in Covent Garden The Hebrew Comic is also remembered in this Church.  He wasn't Jewish...or was he?  At one time the C.I.A. thought he was

Through Godwins Court to St Martins Lane Gaby's Deli, Charing Cross Road
Walk from Covent Garden to Godwins Court.  Walk through to St Martin's Lane and then Charing Cross Road. Walk up Charing Cross Road and maybe stop for a salt beef sandwich at Gaby's Deli.
Soho Theatre, Dean Street - formerly The West End Great Synagogue Mizrach on the Eastern wall of West End Great synagogue
Soho Theatre in Dean Street - formerly the West End Great synagogue - now amalgamated with the Western Marble Arch synagogue. A Mizrach (Google it) inside the former synagogue on the Eastern Wall - a reminder of the theatre's former use.  Climb the stairs to see it..but ask first.

Approaching Soho Square - one of the prettiest and most unexpected open spaces in the West End. Soho Square - location for Jewish impresarios, producers, directors, synagogues, Jewish charities and more. Bernard Delfont and Michael Balcon had offices here.

Soho hospital for women - many Jewish patients passed through here, including my aunt. Former Beit HaSepher synagogue, Soho Square.  A mezuzah is still on the front door.

14 Manette Street - West End Talmud Torah and Bikkur Holim synagogue.  It amalgamated with the West End Great synagogue, Dean Street in 1948. Inside cover West End Talmud Torah and Bikkur Holim synagogue siddur (prayer book).
Former tailors' workshops, St Anne's Court Intriguing sign on Clarion House, St Anne's Court
St Anne's Court - Jewish tailoring workshops once lined this pretty alleyway.  Take a look at Clarion House if you walk through. A curious plaque on Clarion House, St Anne's Court.  Can anyone shed light on this?
Berwick Street - home of Jewish fashion shops, fabric merchants and schleppers Walkers Court at the bottom of Berwick Street
Berwick Street market, Schleppers (women who work the street), dress shops and cloth merchants once lined the street.  A few Jewish traders still remain. Walker's Court at the bottom of Berwick Street - an interesting place...French model 2nd floor etc...
Peter Street Board School, off Berwick Street Bible awarded to Rachel Isaacs by  Board Schools Religion Classes, Peter St Hebrew school, Soho
Peter Street School, off Berwick Street. Before the War the majority of its pupils were Jewish In 1905 Rachel Isaacs won a prize in Peter Street school's Hebrew school.  I hope she had a good life.
Westminster Jews Free School, Hanway Place off Oxford Street Westminster Jews Free School, Hanway Place
Westminster Jews Free School, Hanway Place.  Closed in 1940 when most of the community had moved away. Another view of Westminster Jews Free School, Hanway Place.  Well worth the walk!
