London's East End Synagogues, cemeteries and more......

My personal journey through the Jewish East End of London

Settle Street synagogue, once the home shul of the Sassover Rebbe

I've long been intrigued by the vaguely ecclesiastical shape of the greengrocer's shop at 34 Settles Street on the corner with Fordham Street.  Its long been known to me that this was once the home shul of the Sassover Rebbe, and I confess I once passed up the opportunity to hear him speak at nearby Nelson Street synagogue in 2002 shortly before his death in 2003.  Up until October 2011 I had never been inside 34 Settles Street.  However, equipped with my camera, I did go inside and to my amazement could still see the outlines of what must once have been a rather grand synagogue interior.  Ornate pillars were still intact amongst the cans of Whiskas and Cornflakes, and I asked the owner if he would mind me taking photos. He was very friendly and invited me to carry on...so, below are some photos for you: first the exterior of the building and then the interior.
